Newborn Hearing Screenings
The majority of infants born in hospitals are screened for hearing before going home. This type of hearing test uses small headphones and stickers that attach to the baby’s skin. A soft clicking sound is played in each ear, and a computer measures the brain’s response to the sound. The baby sleeps during this short, painless test. Babies who did not receive a hearing screening at birth should be screened within the first month of life.
Cerumen, or ear wax, can be removed from the ear canal so that it does not interfere with listening or comfort, especially for individuals who wear hearing aids.
Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs): FM Systems
We offer information and guidance on use of assistive listening devices, such as amplified telephones, FM transmitter systems, and infrared systems.
Audiometric Evaluations: Adults & Pediatric
The audiometric evaluation (audio) consists of testing with both speech and pure tones. Testing with pure tones is done to determine the amount of hearing loss for volume. Speech discrimination scores are obtained to estimate the loss of understanding. Further more in depth diagnostic evaluations are conducted depending on the type of problem you are experiencing. There are numerous tests that we conduct to evaluate children depending on their age and type of problem. Newborns may be tested utilizing special test such as and ABR or otoacoustic emissions testing. These test are electrophysical tests which evaluate the response of the auditory system and do not require a response from the child. Older children are evaluated using more conventional techniques that may be modified for their age level. Click here to learn more.
Balance and Dizziness: ENG (electronystagmography)
The inner ear is responsible for both hearing and balance. Electronystagmography (that’s why we call it ENG – it’s shorter) is a battery of tests designed to evaluate part of the inner ear balance system, as well as more “central” components that work together to maintain our equilibrium.
All batteries are toxic and dangerous if swallowed. Keep all batteries (and hearing aids) away from children and pets. If anyone swallows a battery it is a medical emergency and the individual needs to see a physician immediately.
